The first annual SSES CO₂ Car Races kicked off in high spirits, with families cheering from the sidelines and students proudly showcasing their creations. Each car waited in its numbered pit, giving families a chance to admire the artwork, craftsmanship, and unique designs before the racing began. No two cars looked alike — a perfect setup for a true test of creativity, engineering, and aerodynamics.

Concept, Design & Finished Car

CO₂ car racing has become a popular hands‑on STEM challenge in schools, guiding students through the full design process. What begins as a simple wedge‑cut block of wood transforms into a sleek racing machine shaped by lessons in physics, engineering, and airflow. Students also bring their artistic flair to each car, adding custom paint, graphics, and finishing touches that make every entry one‑of‑a‑kind.

The Race Begins

The track features two lanes, each guided by a taut string to keep the cars on course. At the starting line, a timing system and CO₂ puncture mechanism launches the cars with a burst of carbon dioxide — the “fuel” that propels them down the track at impressive speed.

As the countdown began, excitement filled the room. SSES students watched eagerly to see how their designs performed in real time, celebrating every fast run, close finish, and unexpected twist.
