GUEST LECTURE SERIES -

Chuck Andreas Brings Food Preservation to Life for SSES Students

Chuck Andreas recently was a Guest Lecturer at SSES to share with students about something we all rely on but don’t always think about—food preservation. His talk showed that keeping food safe and lasting longer isn’t just an old-fashioned skill, but one that’s super handy in today’s unpredictable world.

He painted a few real-life scenarios where preserved food can make all the difference—like when the power goes out, cooking isn’t an option, or during emergencies such as evacuations after natural disasters. In those moments, having food that’s ready to go can be a real lifesaver.

To give students a closer look, Andreas walked them through different preservation methods, including pressure canning, dehydrating, and freeze drying. He explained how each technique works best with certain containers—think glass jars, plastic, or mylar bags—and highlighted how vacuum sealing can help food last even longer.

The session wrapped up with a lively Q&A, where students jumped in with questions and responses. Their enthusiasm showed just how much they connected with the topic, and how food preservation isn’t just about history—it’s a skill that can make everyday life (and emergencies) a lot easier to handle.
